DLPOA At Work

Purpose: "to protect the lake from environmental depredation"... ..."and to do all and everything necessary, suitable, and proper for the accomplishment of the purposes."

Founded: in 1974-17 members; by 1987-450 members

NOTICE OF ANNUAL MEETING -@ JUNE 20,1987 7:30 P.M. LOON LAKE SCHOOL, LOON LAKE, WASHINGTON

The ANNUAL MEETING of the Deer Lake Property Owners' Association (DLPOA) has been scheduled at the above date, time and place. The ANNUAL MEETING is open to all members and prospective members of this association comprising land owners around Deer Lake.

This meeting is the time once a year when the complete membership assembles in an open forum to:

Each of the areas discussed will impact you and your property-financially, environmentally and socially. Decisions are made after carefully studying the issues, with the input of DLPOA members being carefully considered.

Every year the annual meeting has gained additional support of the membership. We estimate 150 or more members will attend this year. Board members will recap the past year's activities and coming year's plans. Your officers will likewise give you a yearly report and talk about special projects which they are responsible for.

A special event at this year's annual meeting will be a drawing for a LOGGING TRUCKLOAD OF FIREWOOD donated by the Boise Cascade Company. This is their contribution to help DLPOA pay for the 22 acres of land in the headlands of the Deer Lake Narrows. Raffle tickets can be purchased from any DLPOA officer or board member. The wood will be delivered free to any place in Stevens County. These firewood raffle tickets will be sold at the Annual Meeting, so you still have a chance to be a winner. Please help DLPOA by buying some tickets, Refreshments will be served after the meeting, at which time we all become better acquainted as neighbors privileged to enjoy a common heritage -- Deer Lake. We need and covet your attendance and participation, so please mark your calendars. Remind your lake neighbors, too, so that this once-a-year event will make our elected officials and all of us proud of the great community spirit we Deer Lakers have. Only with such enthusiasm and participation can we continue to achieve the betterment of our lake and ensure its beauty for future generations.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Bill Paton, president

My wife and I are retiring as your secretary and president of the Deer Lake Property Owners' Association on June 20,1987. We wish to take this opportunity to thank all of the DLPOA members for their support and contributions toward the purchase of the 22 acres of land this past December t was such an important thing for our association to do in order to preserve the water quality of Deer Lake and also the property values of ALL the land owners around the lake. The names of all those wonderful folks who contributed, and didn't leave the paying to someone else, are listed alphabetically in this newsletter. I hope YOUR name is there. If not, please consider sending your fair share soon.

The officers and board of directors have been very generous with their time and untiring efforts on various improvement projects. Eleanor and I leave the lake and DLPOA with very mixed emotions but we are confident that DLPOA will continue to be strong and dedicated to the"preservation of a clean and beautiful lake for future generations to enjoy."

We will miss you all. Thanks, again!

EMERGENCY SERVICES Jerry Linfon, chairman

This committee reported in the February, 1987 newsletter that the Stevens County fire commissioners had budgeted the funds for the Deer Lake Fire Station addition. We were told that construction could start sometime this spring.

Recently Steve Sipe, Stevens County fire commissioner, met at the fire station with the architect to review the plans and take some additional measurements. In so doing the architect arrived at a rough estimate of the cost of construction. Unfortunately, the figure was above the amount budgeted by the fire commissioners. Therefore, at their last meeting, they voted against the construction.

Our committee will continue to discuss the matter with the commissioners. Alternatives will be considered. Steve Sipe has spent many hours working on this project. Our thanks to him and the other commissioners for their continued concern. Progress will be reported to you all as it develops.

RECORD FIRE DANGER AHEAD??? Could this be one of our worse summers for fires? Already forest fires have been reported in Eastern Washington, and, of this writing, we have had several days of hot, dry weather!! It looks like an early fire season and maybe a long one. The past winter had one of the lowest recorded snowpacks in the mountains. Already much of this snow has melted.

We all deserve a great amount of praise because of our desire and effort to eliminate dangerous, costly fires in the past. Let's keep up the good work and continue to exercise caution at all times, wherever we may be.

A reminder, again, for those people around the lake who have fire extinguishers in their homes. BE SURE AND HAVE THEM IN GOOD WORKING ORDER!

For answers on questions about burning, phone: 466-9000 or Department of Natural Resources, 1-800-562-6010 and ask for ColviIIe.

WATER SAFETY COMMITTEE Howard J. Wohrle, chairman

Our volunteer water sheriff will be Sam Smith. Sam is retired from Washington State Highway Department, so he will be available during the week as well as on weekends. We thank Sam for his willingness to put in the great amount of hours it takes to help the people of Deer Lake in this way.

Stevens county Sheriff Dick Andres has been very helpful and anxious to make sure that our lake will be adequately covered to enforce boating regulations against accidents and injuries. He has stated that several of his regular deputies will spend time on the lake this year as in the past and that tickets will be issued for violations.

Sheriff Andres said there will be some changes in the water ordinance so that it will be more like those in the neighboring counties. A limited number of the PROPOSED ordinance will be available for study, and any suggestions you might have for it should be sent to Stevens County Sheriff by mid-June.

If you have a reason to need the water sheriff, phone 1-800-572-0947. The dispatcher will contact the right person.

Remember-we must all do our part to keep our lake safe. Have a good summer!

FIREWOOD CUTTING Claire and Lew Houdak, chairmen

Our thanks to Boise Cascade and Kevin Eddings for letting us to cut firewood on their property. Wood is now available in the Buck Creek area. We will be able to cut wood there until a fire danger closes the area. Wood is easier to get there, and there is a good supply. It is not all fir and tamarack, but it is good wood!

If this program is to continue, we need help-at ihe gate and in the woods. Remember-your dues must be paid in order to cut this FREE wood...another good reason to join DLPOA!

LAKE BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE Ben Rasley, chairman

Our immediate plans are to clear the brush around the three new Deer Lake signs and clean up any litter around them.

PLANNING DISTRICT Ted Maxson, chairman

My report will be given at the Annual Meeting on June 20th.

ROAD MAINTENANCE Inga Lord, chairman

A reminder to clear your mailbox area along the road of brush and weeds so that the mail carriers can drive close enough to your mailbox to put your mail in. Let's save the post office having to send us notices to do this!

Have you noticed how free of litter our lake roads are? Thanks to a handful of concerned Deer Lakers who helped me pick up garbage along the roads, even over to highway 395. Let's all help stop littering and do some more "picking up" whenever we go for walks. We love not only clean Deer Lake WATER but a clean area around it, too!

FISHERIES Wes Wagoner, chairman

Again this year as in the past I have raised fish for DLPOA to help stock Deer Lake. On April 20th about 10,000 "small fry" were taken up the creek. The rest were either turned loose along the shore of Deer Lake or put in a cage and are being fed. Hopefully, fishing will be good because of this project.

LEGISLATIVE Clair N. Jones, chairman

There has been no legislation affecting lake owners to report on at this time.

WATER QUALITY Jerry McBrlde, chairman

The long-awaited report by Professor Schultz of EWUon the present quality of Deer Lake water will be given at the Annual Meeting. This study was commissioned by your DLPOA board of directors and is anxiously awaited by all property owners.
