LOON LAKE FIRE DEPT. The Stevens County Fire Commissioners recently issued the Loon Lake and Suncrest Fire Depts. a set of' 'Jaws.'' This equipment is used in vehicle accidents to open up and remove people trapped in the vehicle. The equipment is highly efficient and expensive and will be a great asset to the Stevens County Fire Commissioners for their help and concern.
This summer the Loon Lake Fire Dept. held its annual pancake feed, and a profit of approximately $485.00 was made.
The Depts. number of calls were down during the summer months, in comparison to previous months. -Jerry Linton, reporting
DEER LAKE FIRE DEPT. Our thanks to the people that attended annual Deer Lake Fire Dept. pancake feed, July 10th, at the fire house. It was a grand day and really a great breakfast. Our thanks to the many people that volunteered their help, not only this year buft in last years also. The Dept. realized a profit of approximately $865.00 and I'm sure the money wlll be put to good use in the Dept. Adding to the excitement was the arrival of Lifebird. The helicopter that responds to emergencies, performs critical care, and transports patients. Lifebird came in over the firehouse and landed in a field along side. People had the opportunity to view the helicopter, its equipment, and talk to the pilot and para-medic that were aboard.
STEVENS CO. COMMISSIONERS: My hat's off to each of you! Jack Cogswell, Ken Rosenbloom, and Clive Price. Over 50 of Stevens Co. budget goes to Sheriff, Judicial and Jails. The County is operating in the BLACK without terminating employees or services. Not all things are rosy I'm sure, but each finds at least two or more occasions to attend a DLPOA meeting with Clive Price from Hunters, attending most every meeting. Because these are the kind of gentlemen in office who are seeking input into county affairs, they are there not to be just seen, or heard, but to receive criticism, praise, ideas, and suggestions from those attendees. How else would you expect them to keep up with all that is happening in the county and at the same time develop fresh new approaches to county administration. Thank you for your insights and thoughts and that you think Deer Lake and DLPOA important enough to continue to attend.
DEER LAKE SEWER SYSTEM: Since May of 1983, monthly discussions have been held on the advisability of renewing our efforts for a sewer system around Deer Lake. Meetings have been held with engineers, attorneys, health districts, P.U.D.'s and others knowledgeable on sewer systems. Proposals have been presented and are being considered. The following cartoon depicts an eventual happening on Deer Lake in the future. We will continue to address the topic, and eventually develop recommendations to you, our members and supporters.
An on the spot report by Jerry Othmer at the Oct. 12th DLPOA board meeting in Deer Park, Mr. Glenn Biddle offered the membership an evaluation of the Stevens County P.U.D. proposals concerning feasibility of a sewage system for Deer Lake. Mr. Biddle provided information relating to P.U.D. authority and capability. No statements for or against such a project have been made but investigation is progressing. In the course of factfinding DLPOA needs to be sensitive to legalities and intent of all language as it regards property owners in general. The DLPOA Board finds Itself In a curious position; on the one hand, the Board is viewed in many quarters as being a sounding board as it relates to opinion samplings. On the other side, the board is not in a position to sanction any action on a subject of this type. The intent of the Board at this Juncture is to act as a factfinding body, sharing Information and supressing confusion.
As the Loon Lake system progresses, things should become clearer in meaning and Impact. DLPOA would hope to be supportive to its members and provide a maximum of information when and if the subject appears to be workable.
WOODCUTTING; The sound of chain saws was deafening this fall on Buck Creek, when DLPOA again arranged and supervised membership excursions into the woods ,THANK YOU Boise Cascade for the excellent opportunity given our organization to both clean up and recycle, otherwise destroyed wood but also to once again show that woodcutters as a group are considerate, not destructive, and appreciative. We had cutting weekends in June and again in September and October. Final count has not been made but over 60 to 70 members made many trips loaded with tamarack, fir and pine for the wood stove
(A late report by Jerry Othmer at our October Board meeting.) The DLPOA Board members involved with firewood expeditions in the Buck Creek area in early October heard many compliments from participation members. Appreciation was expressed for the opportunity to enter this secured section owned by Boise Cascade Board action and administration helped to lower the bars for all who made arrangements. It is estimated the participants harvested 150 cords of wood during the two weekends.
It is a shame that more time could not be given to this endeavor as there were still lots of cords of wood that will be ultimately destroyed. Especially we are thankful to Kevin Eddlnas of Bolse Cascade and to the DLPOA Wood Committee of Lee Bayley, Bill Paton Lew Houdak, Jerry McBrlde, Ben Rasley, Jerry Linton, Don Kenny, Jerry Othmer, Charles Barker, Dale Jones, Don Mackey and others who donated their time to help supervlse the expeditions.
For the large part we commend the woodcutters for their courtesy and helpfulness to others. Although there are always some flat spots on the wheel, we will not attempt to reinvent it for next year, but will try to improve as we go along. We appreciate the many members' expressions of gratitude and will forward them along with DLPOA recommendations to Boise Cascade for continuation next year.
MEMBERSHIP: Woodcutting has assisted greatly in building more membership from lake owners, however each year, growth must go on. Hopefully you will not find yourself among the many who forgot to send in their dues. Even to those who do not cut wood, etc., thus deriving direct benefits of membership, will be delighted in the future years to see the active, positive involvement of DLPOA into the Deer Lake community and Stevens County. Not much is asked. ONLY $12.00/year, plus gratltuous time and energy of the many volunteers who have made DLPOA what it is and will continue to be - an open forum of property owners dedicated to preserve the quality of water, and life at Deer Lake, Washington. Are you not ready to make that committment? Since only members will receive this NEWSLETTER, give the cut out to your neighbor(s) and help us actively recruit everyone into DLPOA.

ROAD MAINTENANCE: Road repair on the west side was completed by October 6th. County road crews filled in rough spots and chuck holes that had plagued all who travel that way. Although narrow, the road surface is now in decent shape for winter.
BOAT SAFETY: I'm sure you all saw at one time or another, the Stevens Co. Sheriff's Patrol Boat on Deer Lake. This boat had great impact because of its visibility as well as the diplomacy of Special Deputy Dave Nixon, with the reduced infractions on the Lake, there are always some of course, but not like years past. Thankful also, no serious injuries or accidents on the Lake this year. Presently the boat is winterized, had some motor repair work done and stored until next spring.
