DLPOA Newsletter Spring 1981

January 1981

BEST WISHES : Our Best Wishes to all in the Deer Lake community from the Directors of DLPOA, for a year abundantly filled with joy, good health, world peace and economic growth. Some things are beyond our immediate control, to have either a positive or negative effect on the national or world scene. Other things, if approached with the right attitude, enthusiasm, and commitment, can be controlled and directed by our own hand.

To give you an example: Three or four months ago we were approached by the Loon Lake Fire Dept. for contributions to assist them in building a rapid response type vehicle to be on call with the purpose of getting to the scene of an accident or answering an emergency call faster than could the fire truck or ambulance service from Deer Park or Chewelah. The volunteer firemen at Loon Lake had the opportunity to pick up an International Travelall, rebuild it, paint it, equip it and have other volunteers receive emergency medical training. The only thing to make this a complete success was to get enough contributions. The Directors of DLPOA felt the community need was real and the service wanted so we agreed on your behalf to become involved, as much as we could to the extent that any other group was involved.

The RAPID RESPONSE vehicle is now a reality and has already responded to three or four emergencies, however heavy duty cutting equipment, etc. to remove people from autos and other necessary emergency equipment are still needed. An appeal for contributions from the residents of Deer Lake and Loon Lake and surrounding area, along with notification of the new number - 466-0911 - for emergency or fire service. All of you can use this service and should be proud of our part in its development. If one life can be saved it will be more than worth our time and dollars spent. If you want to participate (your friends and neighbors have already given over $250.00) in this project your contributions will be greatly appreciated and greatly needed to HELP US HELP EACH OTHER.

Our wishes for JOY and GOOD HEALTH

NEWSLETTER CORRECTION : In our last Newsletter, we talked about your ability to have water samples checked at Tri-County Health in Colville. We need to make further clarifications. Tri-County Health only tests for coliform bacteria and are not a certified lab. However Tri-County Health feels that their test results are accurate enough to give private water supply owners indication of the bacterial quality of their systems. Since this service is provided for no fee, and in order to keep costs at a minimum, they will only accept one sample per system per year. They also require that the sample be taken in a bottle provided by Tri-County Health and no other, (which we erronously reported in our last letter). The sample should be hand delivered and not mailed to Colville and not on Fridays or days preceding holidays. Further questions can be addressed to: Mr. James Matsuyama, Director, Tri-County Health Dist., Colville, Wash. ... Phone 684-5048. (Sorry about the mistake Jim. Thanks for your letter of correction.)

It is highly contagious. It banishes gloom and discouragement. Everybody needs it. Wicked men try to kill it. Wise men never hoard it. It can't be bought at any price, yet it is worth the whole world. The answer, in a word, is HOPE ...

DISBELIEF: To much of our disbelief, Boise Cascade has closed the Buck Creek Road and adjacent area to public travel by motorized vehicles. Their reasoning and justification was the malicious damage done to Boise Cascade equipment and the prolific cutting of firewood, (and in some cases GREEN TREES), that had great value to Boise Cascade. The timeliness of the closure was just before hunting season opened and without much notification to the general public. I'm sure many hunters, snowmobilers, and hikers and nature lovers, will miss the use of this area which we have come to take for granted. DLPOA expressed to Boise Cascade our displeasure over the closure announcement and share with all recreational enthusiasts this lost source of enjoyment. As future developments take place, we will keep you posted.

Along with this you will notice that Boise Cascade has had a road bulldozed high above the lake on the northwest side and up through the narrows. Trees have been marked for logging operations to be started soon. In fact, many property owners through the narrows have reported their deeds give Boise Cascade timber rights to their property. How close to the lake they will actually cut we don't know, but trees are marked with in 200 yards or so of the water. I'm sure the logging operation around the lake will be completed before many of you return for the summer. Not wishing to unduly alarm anyone, we are just trying to prepare you for the change in the scenery. We have become accustomed to the enjoyment of the evergreens and wildlife around the lake and cherish those memories.

When a man begins to understand himself, he begins to live. When he begins to live he begins to understand his fellow man.

NEW COMMITTEE : Fire Protection Committee members include Les Schneider, Howard Wohrle and Ted Maxson. Purpose is to coordinate fire related efforts and activities between the So Stevens Co. Fire commissioners and the Loon Lake and Deer Lake Fire districts.

Action may not always bring happiness, but there is no happiness without action.

FISHERIES COMMITTEE : Wes Wagoner, chairman, reports that the State expressed willingness to again give us lots of egg spawn, also a fish trough or two for our fish hatchery. (We can't say enough good things about Wes' efforts to develop his fish hatchery and add more fish to the lake, for the benefit of all of us. We know it will pay off if we continue to encourage him.)

How can you fail if your goal is only to do the best that you can?

There's a great difference between good, sound advice and advice that sounds good.

PLEASE ... If you are selling your property would you tell us who the new owner is so we can get the NEWSLETTER to them. Also ask your lake neighbor if they are receiving one; if not, let us know and we'll be sure they are added to our mailing. Also trailer owners at the resorts are also eligible to become associate members of DLPOA and encourage their involvement. For our other readers who own property at Deer Lake and who are not members, maybe a New Year's resolution would be to become a member in good standing of the DEER LAKE PROPERTY OWNERS ASSOC. (DLPOA) Call our Secretary Eleanor Paton, ph. 233-2348 on changes in property ownership. Send your $12 00 membership dues to our Treasurer Kathryn Bean, N. 2803 Stout Rd., Spokane, WA 99206- or to D.L.P.O.A., Rt. 1 Box 78, Loon Lake, WA 99148.

REMINDER: We still are offering a $500.00 reward to anyone who gives the Sheriff's Dept. information leading to the arrest and conviction of anyone burglarizing cabins or doing malicious damage, theft, etc. Please keep alert this winter to the security of your property.
