Gone Fishing
Or whatever it is you do in Kansas at this time of the year.

Speaking of Fishing
by Jim Santora

I had a very nice winter batch of fish. The mortality rate was very low. They were released on April 7th. and I received a new batch of fish on April 21. The new fish are regular Rainbows as there will be no more Triploid Rainbows in Deer Lake. Hope it is a good fishing season for all.

Deer Lake Aerial Photos
by Mike Phillips

We are making aerial photographs of Deer Lake available for purchase. They are 24 x 36 inches. They are in color and show good detail. There are two types available. One is about 75% land and 25% lake showing the areas around the lake. The other is about 80% lake and 20% land. I will have samples of them at our annual meeting. We will take orders with payment upfront. The price is $99 each. They would make a great addition to the lakefront homes. You will be able to point out where everyone lives and where to find those big fish. You can also see where the shallow areas are you want to avoid. They will not be framed so you can go as fancy as you want. The cheapest frame I found is $17 at Wall Mart. The frames there are black or white with a plastic covering. It will take about a week or so to complete the orders. The only problem is delivery. Since I am reasonably centrally located you will have to pick them up at my house at Camp Gifford. For more info call me at 233-2510.

Annual Meeting

Volunteers are needed. Those helpers from past years, can you volunteer again this year? Please contact Lee Bayley, 326-0954.

This has been a Deer Lake tradition and The social event for our community. What better chance to meet your neighbors, renew friendships, introduce your guests, and kick off a fun week of 4th of July events at Deer Lake.

Snail Mail Problems
by Gary Boothe, Sec/Trea. Pebble Beach Assoc.

Is anybody else around the lake having difficulty with mail delivery? Our association, Pebble Beach, installed one of those neighborhood mail box delivery thing-a-ma-jigs. Ever since then, the delivery keeps getting put into the wrong boxes and maybe, if we are lucky, the recipient returns the misdirected mail in a month or so. The association has sent two letters, and made two phone calls to the Postmaster at Loon Lake to no avail.

If you have any knowledge of similar problems around the lake we would like to know so that we could contact the Postmaster with others and get this resolved.

(Editor's note - we were later informed that this problem has been fixed.)

Deer Lake Demolition Dock Day
June 2, 2007
8:00 am 1:00 pm
Location: Sunrise Point

Each year, members of the Deer Lake Property Owners Association volunteer their time to clean our shoreline and rid Deer Lake of old, abandoned and derelict docks. These unwanted docks are towed to Sunrise Point, where they are removed from the lake and demolished. This is a great way to keep our shoreline clear of debris and our lake safe.

Please bring docks to be demolished to SUNRISE POINT JUNE 2, 2007 between 9:00 AM till 1:00 PM. Sunrise Point is adjacent to Pinelow Nazarene Church Camp.

If help is needed to tow a dock, please contact Bill Bajadali at 509 999-7487 to make arrangements.

Finally, we need volunteers, for labor, boats to tow docks in and tools for this event to keep our lake safe and beautiful.

Any one wanting firewood for bon fires etc. you are welcome to take wood from the demolished docks.

HOT DOGS and REFRESHMENTS will be served.

New Board Members

We have added two new members to our DLPOA Board. They are Ken Ring, and Mike Eagan.

Hello DLPOA members. My name is Mike Egan and I am a new board member. I live at 3839 N. Deer Lake Rd. I have lived here for just over 4 years and really enjoy the area and Deer Lake residents. I am interested in the issues at hand around the lake and wish to contribute to the betterment of our lake community. I am currently president of the Gardner Beach L.L.C.,(private). As of this writing we are 25 members strong and growing. I Look forward to being of service to the DLPOA board in any way I can and to you, the members.

DLPOA Property

Most people probably know that we own 20 or so acres at the end of the narrows. You may not know that we also have a small piece of (non frontage) land just up from Camp Gifford. Your board has been discussing for a couple of years or so just what to do with it. Some would like to build a community center. Some question whether we can afford a project like that. Should we give it to the county for a Fire Station or something? This subject will be a significant agenda item at our annual meeting. We welcome any and all inputs, suggestions, both pro and con. One answer, of course, can be to do nothing. Some ideas will require finding some serious bread. Some ideas may not require much investment at all.

EMERGENCY SERVICES
BY Gerry Block

Dear neighbors and friends of the Deer Lake community. We have had a safe winter, as far as the fire district's response for calls around the lake. As most are aware, the lake iced over and it became an activity field for all that took advantage of this great event. The roads and sidewalks may have been a hazard, but the frozen lake gave everyone an opportunity to get outside and enjoy some exercise. This was a real treat!

Now that we are into spring we have other concerns, regarding fire and water safety. So far, Deer Lake is still under the same burning conditions as last year. We are still allowed to burn yard and garden debris. Remember one fire pile at a time, dry needles/debris and a hot fire. I realize that everyone is anxious to get the burning done ASAP, but if your fire creates a mass smoke hazard, you are violating a clean air condition for burning. Rake the debris and cover with a tarp for a future burn. A neighbor may be suffering from any COPD condition and the fire pit burn, may be an irritant to that condition. Should your fire be reported, the station crew will pay a visit to your home. We hope that "responsible neighbors" will cooperate with the advice from the fire district rep. A fine from the Department of Ecology can be expensive!

Another call for lake/area volunteers for the SCFD#1 response team/teams. The district needs qualified volunteers for fire, EMS or fire/EMS. This is a commitment to the community! Not everyone can respond to every call. The district realizes the family, in town responsibilities, and shift differentials. Whatever time you feel that you may allow for the fire district, would be greatly appreciated. I also want to add my own opinion. Should you appear upon a "scene", are more than qualified to assist a lone responder, please let that responder know your credentials for patient care. A "gofer", may be of great assistance, during a multiple patient incident.

Have a safe summer!

Deer Lake Memories

My name is Barry Lilly and I live in McMinnville, Oregon. I grew up in northern Idaho. During my teen years in the 1960s, my aunt and uncle had a small A Frame cabin on the east side of Deer Lake. I was fortunate to be able to spend at least a few days each summer at the lake.

Their cabin was quite rustic. It had electricity but no running water. They did have a water spigot on the porch which brought water from the lake. Drinking water had to be brought in, however. The "outhouse" was up the mountain behind the cabin. I remember boating across the lake to the Pearl-Ray resort to buy snacks and to get gas for the boat. Several times, I walked the road a few miles south to Haney's resort. I also went searching a time or two for the nudist camp I heard about but was never successful in finding it.

Editor's Note - As a lake newby (1994), I would love to hear from people who have had access to the lake in years long past. We keep meaning to do some interviews with some of our senior members, but somehow never do.

Spring Roadside Cleanup
by Mike Phillips

Thank goodness it's spring. This time of year we also get to see what winter and thoughtless people left behind along our roads. Anyone wanting to help clean and get a little exercise, call or just show up and ask those working where they need help. On the west side of the lake we need help on Agar and Grouse Creek road.

Call John Gregerson to find out where they need help on the East side of Deer Lake. Those people that regularly help in the Spring and Fall, just do your usual good job. Thank you.

Special bags are will be available Friday evening at Deer Lake Resort and the Fire Station on the East side. Some bags are left on the front porch of the Nazarene Church. If you can't cleanup on Saturday, feel free to do it the week before. Leave the bags along side the road. We will pick them up Saturday morning. DO NOT TAKE THEM TO THE DUMP YOURSELF. Thank you.

Date: Saturday, May 12th
Time: as soon as you want to start. Usually about 8:00 A.M. Until done (about 2 hours or less).

Chili Feed and get acquainted time: After the cleanup all are invited to a free chili feed at the fire station on the east side from 10:00 am until people stop coming.

Information: call Mike Phillips, 233-2510 for the Westside or John Gregerson for the Eastside, 233-8419.

Thank you again for all the help. The more hands we have the shorter the time we all have to work.

DLPOA Board Meetings
by the Newsletter Scrivner

Our board meetings are held on the second Thursday of most months. I think they are very interesting, but that may be only because I love meetings in general and hearing the latest lake gossip (excuse me, news - I already got beat up for that once) sooner rather than later, and getting free cookies. A few times a year, these meetings have a presentation that can be of great interest to even non lake policy wonks. Most recently, we had presentations by the local assessor on your lake taxes, by a guy who wants to eradicate your lake weeds, and by some professionals from the Department of Ecology, where they discussed the ecology of a lake, and of our lake in particular. Prior to that, we had a visit from the Loon Lake POA, describing their intent to gather scientific data on the evolution of the lake over several years time, and asking us if we wanted to do the same thing at our lake.

While these newsletters try to give you a synopsis of all the important items, the really good stuff can be found on our web site, at www.dlpoa.com/boardnotes.htm. There is a one month delay in posting the minutes of the board meetings for some silly reason. The minutes for the last several years are on line, along with these newsletters back to the dawn of time.
