PRESIDENTS MESSAGE By Larry Nokes

Well, it looks as though we are going to have spring and summer after all. Mother Nature kept winter around longer than I like. Lake season 2002 should be a great one. The water is clean and up some with lots of fish. The county is going to clean up the downed trees along the roads and after spring clean-up things should look tidy. All of us homeowners need to do our part to clear up the extra winter damage and help in this clean-up effort. If we all participate the lake area will be beautiful for all to enjoy.

Something new for the lake is the dock clean-up. Please check out the notice from George Renner about this. If you have an abandoned dock or one you would like to get rid of this is the perfect opportunity.

If at all possible, please plan on attending the annual membership meeting on June 15th at the lodge at the Deer Lake Resort. The meeting starts at 10:30 AM and as always, a potluck barbecue will follow with DLPOA providing the hot dogs.

FOURTH OF JULY By Larry Nokes

The Fourth of July this year will be bigger and better than 2001. Be sure to plan on being at the lake with all your friends and relatives. With a renewed sense of community and patriotism it should be a great day.

It all starts at 10:30 AM with a youth parade of decorated wagons, bikes, carts, wheelbarrows or whatever. Pets on leashes are welcome too. Horses and other livestock won't be allowed because of safety concerns. The parade will begin at Deer Lake Resort and end at West Bay Resort. Prizes will be awarded for originality and patriotism and all participants will receive a treat for their effort. Any questions call Larry Nokes at 233-2088.

The boat parade will begin at 7:30 at Deer Lake Resort and all watercraft are welcome.

Decorate and join the fun as we circle the fake prior to the fireworks. Call John Gregerson at 233-8419 with questions or suggestions.

The finale to a great day will be the fireworks display which will start about 9:30 PM We will anchor the dock this year so where you start watching you will be able to finish watching. The display will be grander than last year so if you enjoyed 2001 don't miss this year. Remember, if you watch the display from your boat please stay a minimum of 300 feet from the display dock.

Last but certainly not least, if you donated for the Fourth celebration THANK YOU THANK YOU. THANK YOU!. If you would still like to donate, please do so.

See you at the lake for a great Fourth of

FISHERIES By Jim Santora

15,000 Rainbow trout were released from my fish pen on April 5th. They weighed 4.6 to the pound and to my knowledge I only lost three fish. Right now, my chance of getting Triploids is slim as the fisheries just don't have enough to go around. We'll keep hoping as things could change.

Bruce Bassett is going to hold off the release of the Eastern Brook for a while to see low high the take is going to get. He doesn't want to release them and have them go out the over-flow.

Fishing season opens Saturday, April 27.

DOCKS

The Deer Lake Property Owners Association with me cooperation and assistance of Nitebird Towing, Deer Lake Resort and the Salvation Army Camp. will be removing docks from the lake the latter part of June.

Please contact George Renner by June 1, 2002 at 233-2817 for this free service. In addition, docks being replaced or discarded by the owner will be removed for a nominal fee.

EMERGENCY SERVICES By Gerry Block

The ice is off the lake and thoughts are of spring, the arrival of summer, and the return of the "summer folks". We have had a safe winter and pray that the summer months will hold the same news. With the arrival of increased activities within our community, I am addressing a subject that we need to discuss. All of us have some medical history past or present. Check the bathroom cupboard to see just what meds are kept in supply. I have Benedryl, Ibuprofen and Tylenol and all our prescribed meds.

The American Red Cross. Spokane Pharmacists Assoc. and Sacred Heart Medical Center have available a "Vial of Life" kit that is vital to your EMS responders. There have been some changes in the kit since I last wrote about it This is NOT the requested information for a "DO NOT RESUSCITATE". That is another form and requires a lot of soul searching or personal convictions regarding ones last wishes. This article will only deal with the -Vial of Life . The

kit contains a medical history; diabetes, high or low blood pressure, cancer, etc. There is a plastic container that resembles a 35 mm film container, a red sticker and directions for the use of the kit. A history sheet allows for four family members, but a copy can be made for more family members.

Sounds simple, but when a loved one is in trouble, the brain power is decreased, There is a section requesting medication information that should be updated frequently Directions for placement of the canister and the red sticker are included. I would change the placement of the red sticker to read most frequently used entrance to the home so if you needed to call 911 it would be the entrance the EMS responders would enter.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to include a sticker for each entrance.

The "Vile of Life" kits are available from the ARC, 315 West Nora, Spokane, 326-3330

I will also have a supply available for the DLPOA annual membership meeting on Saturday. June 15,2002. The annual meeting will be held at 10:30 AM at the Deer Lake Resort in the Eagles Nest Lodge.

HAVE A SAFE SUMMER. Gerry

WATER QUALITY By Mike Phillips

How clean is your beach??

I was checking out the beach the other day after the ice left and I found several items on the shore. Among things like plastic bottles a stray dock. miscellaneous wood and foam cups 1 saw a lot of small foam pieces from dock logs. Over the years I have noticed varying amounts strung out along the entire waterline. This material is not biodegradable. It floats around the lake and collects on most of our shorelines. It is hard to clean up and is an eyesore to those of us having to deal with it. There is something a person can do to help alleviate this problem. Those people that have docks held up by the white, orange or blue logs might consider a couple of options. One is to wrap the logs in heavy sheet plastic. Another is to replace them with cedar logs, pontoons, plastic barrels or large pvc pipe. Please consider these possibilities as the bottom line is. we do not need our docks shedding all over our beautiful lake. In one of the other articles you will note we are attempting to rid the lake of old unwanted docks by removing them from the lake. With some effort on all of our parts we may eventually slow or stop this problem.

PLEASE HELP KEEP OUR LAKE CLEAN!

SPRING ROAD CLEANUP AND CHILI FEED by Tim Dschaak

This years spring cleanup is scheduled for Saturday, May 18. This annual event benefits everyone on and around Deer Lake and although we have over 800 members, less than 1% turn out to help. Call Mike Phillips at 233-2510 for the west side or Pam & Tim Dschaak at 233-2901 for the east side to select a segment of road to clean. This only takes a couple of hours and the chili feed at the east side fire station is a great way to meet neighbors and friends. Signs will be set out early so volunteers can start on their section whenever they want to. Pick up your bags, safety vests, etc at either the Deer Lake Resort on the west side, or the fire station on the east side.

Please volunteer to help pickup litter and keep our lake roads clean and looking good.
