Deer Lake Property Owners Association

Annual Meeting, 6-15-02

The meeting was brought to order at 10:30 a.m. by Larry Nokes. The minutes were read and passed. The treasurer's report was read and passed.

Tony Delgado talked about county business . All counties are short of money. Some are out or close to it. The state has mandates that the counties have to follow. This requires them to spend money they don't have. There are obvious problems with the way laws are written. The counties may have to reduce costs through layoffs or shutting down services part of the time.

Larry noted we should be informed of laws about to be passed that might have an impact on us. Tony said environmentalists, without much thought regarding long-term affects are pushing through most of the problem laws. It was noted that the internet gives access to government activities.

The board of directors was reelected and Mark Kirkendall was elected to fill the last position.

Water Safety : Doyle noted that volunteers cannot patrol the lake anymore. Only deputy sheriffs can and they have to be in pairs when they go out. If problems are observed on the lake call 1-800-574-0947 to report them. If we do not call there will be no record of problems and they won't be addressed. There was a suggestion that we pay retired deputies to patrol. There was discussion re: use of the boat on the lake. Nothing was finalized.

Old Docks : George Renner said June 22 would be the dock cleanup day. We will start at 8:00 a.m.. The cost to DLPOA will be about $625.

Firewood: We have maps of areas to cut. The fee is $3.00 to cut all you want. If interested, call Virgil at 233-9178.

4th of July : Parades and fireworks info given by Larry Nokes. The parade will start at 10:30 a.m.. The boat parade will start at 7:00 p.m.The fireworks will start about 10:00 p.m..

Fish: Triploids are here now. 15,000 are in Jim's net and 11,000 brook trout are in Bruce's pen. Triploids live 2 years longer than rainbows. Usually there are 250,000 silvers and 15,000 rainbows put in the lake by fish and wildlife each year.

Cleanup: 46 people picked up 2,500 lbs. of roadside litter. There was a chili feed afterwards.

Membership: Ask your neighbors to join if they haven't yet.

Fire Protection : Bruce reported we are looking into various ways of making those hard to get to areas safer in case of fire. There was extensive discussion about the use of standpipes or blowouts vs. hydrants. Skip Wells, a former fire chief tried to explain the differences but due to lack of time it was decided to table it until the Sept. board meeting.

Signage: Larry T. covered what had been done to the signs in the last year and what we expect to do in the near future. Check the newsletter for more details.

Roads: Plows are damaging signs and guardrails. The county did a good job of cleaning up the storm debris along the roads. We will send a thank you letter.

The meeting had to end as the building was scheduled for use. The meeting ended at 12:00 noon with a picnic following at the Deer Lake Resort BBQ area.   Approx. 65 people attended the meeting with a good turnout for the picnic.
